There
are few words that describe this place. One of them could be wild,
another could be immense, but for me, the person who is in charge
of showing you how beautiful this place is, there is just once sentence
to describe it, "The place where nature gives you reasons to
be alive." The beauty of this place, mixed with the entire
mass of living things, creates a new sense of who and what you are.
Venezuela, or the small Venice, as it is sometimes referred to as,
has one of the richest reservoirs of fauna in all of South America,
making Venezuela great for outdoor explorers. Here you will find
more than 300 species of birds, as well as a large list of mammals
and reptiles that call this place home and tell the story of tropical
evolution.
Description
of the trip
Day 1
In the morning we will visit the highlands of the Andes, lakes,
forests, and waterfalls. In the afternoon we will begin the activities,
a hike and white water rafting. We will spend the first night in
beds in one of our beautiful camps.

Day
2
In the morning: Safari in the high Los Llanos, observing different
types of wildlife, especially the red howler monkey. We will finish
up the morning safari and move to our other camp in the low Los Llanos
(Observation: different types of birds, reptiles and mammals). Arrive
at the camp and in the afternoon head out for a boat ride in the Guaritico
river (National Reservoir of fauna) to observe freshwater dolphins,
caimans, piranhas, and various birds of the area. We will sleep in
hammocks.

Day
3
In the morning: Horseback riding (Observation: anteaters and capybaras)
for four hours in the llanos planes. In the afternoon: search for
anacondas and caimans. Night: Llanera party, traditional Venezuelan
folklore.

4
In the morning: Leave our camp, bathe in a waterfall in Altamira
and return to Merida.

Day 1
In
the morning: We´ll take you to the highlands of El Peñon,
a 63 k.m. downhill ride on mountain bike. After arriving in
Altamira we will do canyoning for around four hours, waterfalls,
free falls, repeling, natural water slides, and much more.
Arrive at our lovely camp in the evening where we will sleep
in beds.

In the morning: Training and getting to know the equipment
and safety measures in order to begin the decent down the
Singuis river in boat. Grades IV and III rapids, four hours
full of wet fun. Return to Merida in the afternoon.

Day 1

down the Acequias river with grade III and III ½ rapids (approx.
Three hours). Overnight stay in our beautiful camp with beds.

In the morning: Make our way up the fast rushing water of the Singuis
river in order to enjoy its grade IV and V rapids (approx. four
hours). Here the fun will reach its maximum because we will be in
the best river in Venezuela to experience this thrilling adventure.
In the afternoon we will return to Merida.

Los
Andes
Sensory overload, battling against a monster of rock and ice.
This trip is what you think of when you think of mountaineering
or climbing, but its not all harsh, the mystic mountains here
in Merida will change the way you see things, allowing you
to be absorbed by the peacefulness of it all. The upper vegetation,
around four thousand meters, remains a fairy tale place where
indigenous people continue to practice secret rituals to praise
the “Patchu Mama” or Mother Earth.
Merida has peaks of nearly five thousand meters, with different
levels for the various skills of climbers, but this isn’t
the real attraction, the place speaks for itself. Trekking
that starts off extremely difficult will end in total relaxation,
in a pool of hot water with a remarkable view of the five
highest peaks in the Sierra Nevada National Park. The mountains
here are a legend, a history, and an adventure that you will
love from beginning to end.

Paramo
Tour
From Merida, we will travel a scenic route by jeep via exciting
mountain roads towards the Andean Paramo. Along the way we will
visit tranquil colonial Andean villages and enjoy the drinks
and delicacies they have to offer.
In the Paramo range, we’ll find the velvety frailejon
(rabbit ears to children), found everywhere in the Paramo. There
are 65 endemic species of this relative to the daisy found in
Venezuela, and botanists think the area was the dispersal center
for all frailejones. One of our first stops is the Andean Condor
re-introduction station. The staff at this station is making
a bold attempt to build-up the population of the world’s
largest bird. A large Condor can have a wing span up to 3.5
meters. To capture this majestic creature’s flight by
camera will surely be a rewarding memory of the Venezuelan Andes.

Next,
we travel up the Pico Aguila, the highest point in Venezuela
reachable by car. Here we will be able to take in the panoramic
views of the Andean peaks and sit-down to a warm Andean lunch.
From here we shall visit the Laguna Mucubaji Park (3,800-m)
of the Sierra Nevada National Park system. Hiking to Laguna
Negra (optional), about 4 km, we will enter a microclimate that
due to its special setting receives more rain and humidity than
the surrounding Paramo area. This extra humidity gives life
to an interesting diversity of plant species, adding color and
greenery to the wind-swept Paramo region. Laguna Negra is a
beautiful site on a clear, calm day. The black water forms such
a perfect mirror that is essentially disappears and is replaced
by the reflection of the trees on the mountainside.
After enjoying the tranquil scenery of the Laguna, you will
journey to Los Frailes if time permits, a quaint colonial mission
of the 17th century. From Los Frailes we work our way back through
the scenic Venezuelan Andes to Merida. We will drop you off
at our hotel.

Los
Nevados
This is an excellent tour for those looking for a combination
of natural history and cultural experiece. We travel by jeep,
by mule and by foot on a circular route from Merida, passing
through quaint, traditional settlements, patchwork farms, semi-desert,
paramo scenery (highland landscape brightened by the flowers
of low-lying plants), high rocky crests dusted with snow and
ice (close to Pico Bolivar), and cloud forest. It’s a
tour for all ages and abilities. Lodging is in typical family
inns of the region.
1st day:
After loading the 4WD Vehicle you will travel to the small Oasis
of El Morro, afterwards it’s strictly 4WD and professional
drivers on the road to the picturesque village of Los Nevados
(2,700 m). The drive up to Los Nevados provides spectacular
panoramics along the way. Once settled here we shall walk around
to appreciate this small and remote village which has been suspended
in time. Accommodations are in a quaint inn where a typical
dinner will be provided.
2nd Day:
We will start the day with a typical breakfast prepared by our
Andean host. From 2,700 m, the mules take the strain as we climb
northwards up the mountain valley to Alto de la Cruz at 4,200
m where you will experience the stark landscape of the Paramo.
From here we have a wonderful view of Pico Bolivar. Departing
from the mules, we trek for around 2 hours down the hill to
our camp at Los Calderones Valley (3,500m). We will spend the
night in the remote Posada Pedro. Mule for packs are provided
from Alto de la Cruz to Mucunutan.
3rd Day:
After taking breakfast, we’ll trek downhill through cloud
forest for 4 hours to Mucunutan. On the way, we will enjoy the
view of Merida City and the cloud forest. The flora and avifauna
is rich wich include lush green mountain forest of bromelaids
and orchids and excellent birding and butterfly siting. From
Mucunutan, a 4WD will transport us to the Mercado Principal
in Mérida where you will sample a typical lunch. Afterwards
your guide will you guide you through the typical mountain mercado
where he/she will introduce you to the wonders of the region.
If you desire there are typical crafts to buy or typical treats
and beverages to enjoy. The market gives you an excellent insight
into the fruits, vegetables, treats, beverages and arts &
crafts of the Andes.

Humboldt
Peak
1st day:
Departing Merida, your driver will bring you to the Mucuy (2000
m), part of the Sierra Nevada National Park. The path goes up
into the cloud forest. This is an area of dense vegetation,
imposing ferns, bromeliads, bamboo, trees covered with a variety
of other plants, mosses, hanging vines, and an abundance of
winged creatures. On this segment of the trek, we’ll pass
several streams and small waterfalls. After passing through
the verdant cloud forest zone we shall trek through several
different vegetation zones to reach the paramo. Camp will be
made at Coromoto Lake (3200 m), a cool alpine lake teeming with
trout.
2nd day:
After packing up, we shall head off for the Laguna Verde (4,000
m) named for its brilliant emerald color and located at the
base of the impressive Humboldt (4,992 m) and Bonpland (4,890
m) Peaks. A little further on, we will set-up camp at Laguna
del Suero (4,200 m) which is nestled in the tranquil surroundings
of these infamous peaks. |
3rd
day:
As we eat a warm breakfast, we can admire how the Laguna acts
as a mirror, reflecting the magnificence of the peaks. We start
our trek back to Coromoto Lake where you are sure to see things
you missed on your trek up. With a nice view of the serene lake
we’ll enjoy our picnic. After lunch, we’ll begin
our decent to La Macuy where our jeep awaits to bring us back
to Merida. Transfer to the hotel.

Bolivar
Peak (5 days And 4 nights)
1st day:
After loading the jeep, we drive from Merida to La Mucuy (2,000
m) of the Sierra Nevada National Park. The path goes up into
the cloud forest. This is an area of dense vegetation, imposing
ferns, bromeliads, bamboo trees covered with a variety of
other plants, mosses, hanging vines, and an abundance of winged
creatures. On this segment of the trek, we’ll pass several
streams and small waterfalls. Camp will be made at Coromoto
Lake (3,200 m), a cool alpine lake teeming with trout.
2nd day:
After packing up, we shall head off for Laguna Verde (4,000
m) named for its brilliant emerald color and located at the
base of the impressive Humboldt (4,992 m) and Bonplaud Peaks
(4,890 m). The way to Laguna Verde is steeper and rockier
than the previous day, and the scenery is much more open as
you follow the valley upwards. A little further on, we will
set-up camp at Laguna del Suero (4,200 m) which is nestled
in the tranquil surroundings of these infamous peaks.

3rd
day:
As we eat a warm breakfast, we can admire how the Laguna acts
as a mirror, reflecting the magnificence of the peaks. From
beautiful Laguna Suero we hike west to Laguna Timoncito and
face a steep uphill slope on loose rocks called "Chomahoma".
Once on top we enjoy spectacular views in both directions.
In the direction of Barinas, you will marvel at how the savanna
plains roll out from the bottom of this range. We’ll
embark on a traverse, which runs along the backside of the
range. Depending on the season, we may cross bare rock or
snow covered landscape to Laguna Timoncito. Camp is made at
the base of Pico Bolivar (4600 m). This is an ideal place
to admire the brilliance of the nighttime sky.
4th Day:
After good nights rest and hot breakfast we’ll start
the climb up to Pico Bolivar (5,007m). On this summit attempt,
we will face rock, snow, and glacier, which require some technical
support by our expert mountain guide. From the summit, you
can capture the splendor of the natural surroundings with
your camera. Descending down to base camp, we will enjoy a
hot, and well-deserved dinner.
5th Day.
After an early breakfast, we’ll hike up to Pico Espejo
(4765 m), the final point for the highest cable car station
in the world. We’ll continue our trek down to the third
cable car station, Loma Redonda (4000 m), where we’ll
grab a hot drink and board the cable car for the trip down
to Merida. |
San
Jose del Sur
1st day:
When we’ve packed up the jeep, we embark upon a tour boasting
exposure to a large variety of ecosystems, going from lush green
cloud forest vegetation where we’ll visit a waterfall.
Then we visit the picturesque Andean village of Jaji, and descend
by mountain bike into a Xerophitic ecosystem, visiting a small
sugar cane mill to observe the production of "panela",
and travelling to a salt lake, the only one of its kind in Venezuela.
Next, we’ll see verdant coffee country, visiting the Coffee
Museum and present day coffee farm. Afterwards, we take a winding
switchback road with a breathtaking view, ascending from 460
m to 2,290 m. Finally, we arrive at a remote Andean village
that’s been lost in time called San Jose, "where
no one else goes". We spend the night at an idyllic Andean
chalet with trout ponds. This lodge, run by the notoriously
talented cook and conversationalist Martin, is of superb quality
in food and accommodation.
2nd day:
We eat a tasty breakfast with Martin and then descend into
the beautiful valley of Tostos either on horse or by foot
with mule support (One of the most enjoyable ways to walk
in the Andes), enjoying the surroundings of eucalyptus trees
and beautiful rivers. Here we will have direct contact with
the villagers. Around us, farmers plow with oxen while villagers
grind their corn by hand in order to make the typical "arepa"
over a wood-fed fire.
Our excursion brings us back to San Jose for lunch and a brief
rest. If you didn’t find horseback riding exciting enough,
we’ll do some exhilarating mountain biking downhill,
arriving at the launch site for your optional paragliding
flight. The view of the valley simply doesn’t get any
better than this. After a full day, we will return to Merida.

Salimos
desde ciudad bolívar a las 9:00 am en transporte terrestre
por un
Trayecto de aproximadamente 3 horas hasta llegar a un parador turístico
donde
Tomamos nuestro primer almuerzo.
Continuamos nuestra excursión por un trayecto de 45 minutos
hasta encontrarnos con una vía de tierra que se interna en
la selva cruzando algunos poblados Indígenas guajibos, después
de 30 minutos en esta encantadora vía, llegamos a un Caserío
indígena y criollo llamado trincheras, localizado a orillas
del
Majestuoso río caura. Saldremos después de nuestra
cena en busca de los diferentes animales que se acercan a las orillas
del río y para ver las estrelladas noches de la Selva. Esto
se hace en curiara o bote indígena....regresamos al campamento
para Dormir a orillas del río en una churuata indígena,
en hamacas con mosquiteros.

Después
del desayuno, nos embarcamos en un espléndido recorrido por
este
Selvático río teniendo la posibilidad de observar
las diversas especies que
Habitan esta mística región tales como las toninas,
perros de agua, caimanes, la
Gran variedad de insectos y aves que tienen como hogar esta hermosa
región.
Visitaremos además, las diferentes islas que vamos encontrando
en nuestro
Recorrido como lo son: isla yokore, isla de jonas, la poncha, y
vichare,
Habitadas por las etnias indígenas yecuanas, senemas y guajibos.
Dormiremos esta primera noche en la isla vichare.

Después
de un suculento desayuno teniendo como escenario la indómita
selva,
Continuamos nuestra travesía por el río negro hasta
llegar a otro río llamado
Nichare, este río es de un cause mas angosto lo cual lo hace
aun mas excitante,
En este río, podremos observar los pobladores haciendo sus
habituales rutinas y
Por supuesto la impresionante selva en todo su apogeo hasta llegar
a un lugar
Llamado el playón, extensa playa a orillas del río
en donde encontraremos una
Preciosa e interesante comunidad indígena que nos abrirá
sus corazones para
Asegurarse de que nos contagiemos con su cultura.
Haremos una interesante caminata nocturna en este lugar en búsqueda
de las
Diferentes criaturas que habitan las noches de la selva.
Día
4
Nos
levantamos temprano para vivir los sonidos de la madrugadora selva
y después de un buen desayuno, emprendemos una caminada hacia
el salto para, la cual nos Tardara aproximadamente 2 o 3 horas,
dependiendo del grupo.
Llegamos entonces a nuestro destino, el salto para, una majestuosa
cascada de 5 Caídas de agua que ensordecen con su poderoso
caudal. En este lugar tomaremos un merecido descanso en el cual
aprovecharemos para Disfrutar de sus aguas y gozar de un rico almuerzo
tipo picnic a orillas del Salto. Retornamos a el playón en
donde cenaremos y pernoctaremos.

5
Desafortunadamente,
después del desayuno, emprendemos nuestro viaje de retorno
a casa haciendo algunas paradas en poblados indígenas.
Hora de llegada a las trincheras es aproximadamente a las 3:00 pm
y después de
Un almuerzo, nos despedimos del río para emprender nuestro
viaje terrestre a
Ciudad bolívar.
Hora aproximada de llegada 8:00 pm.
